In Vitro Fertilization as an Option for Couples with Genetic Disorders: An Overview of Preimplantation Genetic Testing and Related Strategies

Abstract:

Errors in DNA often lead to genetic disorders. Advances in reproductive health technology have provided couples, especially those at risk due to a history of genetic disorders, with new hope in reducing the likelihood of their offspring inheriting such conditions. One prominent development is In Vitro Fertilization IVF, which offers an alternative pathway for families seeking healthy offspring.

The purpose of this review was to explore current strategies that utilize IVF combined with Preimplantation Genetic Testing PGT as effective options for couples dealing with genetic disorders, allowing them to enhance their chances of having children without transmitting these conditions. We conducted a comprehensive literature review using full-text, open-access articles from prestigious databases such as ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Google Scholar, focusing on publications dating back to 2013 and concluding in 2023.

Through this systematic analysis, we identified and synthesized findings from 65 articles across various scientific journals. The keywords guiding our search included in vitro fertilization, reproductive genetic disorders, PGT-A for aneuploidy testing, PGT-M for monogenic disorders, and PGT-SR for structural rearrangements.

Upon carefully examining the selected articles, we found that IVF is indeed a viable option for couples with existing or carrier status of genetic disorders. Additional procedures can be integrated after IVF, such as oocyte donation and PGT, which specifically target aneuploidy, monogenic disorders, and structural rearrangements.

The findings indicate that IVF provides a robust framework upon which various interventions are built to support couples in their quest for healthy offspring, ensuring they can make informed decisions about their reproductive futures. These methodologies offer hope for families grappling with genetic challenges by offering potential solutions to reduce the risks of transmitting genetic disorders to their children.
